It has been said that there are only two tragedies: not to get what one wants and to get what one wants. In this light we find Moses, well advanced in years, atop Mount Pisgah gazing over to the Promised Land. As he gazes, God promises again that this land will be given to his descendants. However, he will not enter it!
The more divine of human tendencies is the exact opposite of interest in what can immediately be grasped and/or enjoyed. Sometimes we exhibit our most God-like qualities when we strain and work toward that which may well remain just out of reach ultimately. This is truly a large enough dream to strive toward.
In his "I Have a Dream" sermon, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. eloquently portrayed a golden age of justice and harmony to come some day, which he did not live to see. In a very real fashion his vision just out of reach picked up those same unreached visions of Abraham Lincoln's dream of reconstruction "with malice toward none ...":
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. (August, 1963, Washington, D.C.)
