It is interesting and important to notice that, according to the Jewish tradition, the day begins at sundown and not at sunup. Indeed, all holy days and festivals begin at night.
Therefore, the Sabbath begins at sundown. According to Rabbi William B. Silverman this is of theological significance. It is not difficult to have confidence in the day and to believe in the existence of light and sunup. The Jewish day begins at night to symbolize the faith, even in darkness, that light will prevail and that a new morrow will dawn upon humankind.
