It may come as a surprise to some people to learn that the original purpose of the YMCA when it was founded in England in 1865 was evangelism. And toward that end the YMCA offered Bible study programs and Sunday schools. But that drive for evangelism ended shortly after World War I, when the YMCA began to shift away from its evangelistic roots and to move more in the direction of social and recreational activities. So the Young Men's Christian Association started out with preaching and teaching Christ as its purpose, with some social and recreational programs on the side. In time, though, that changed so that the social and recreational activities took center stage and the religious part was moved a bit to the side. The sad thing is that the same kind of criticism could be brought against many churches. How many churches get involved in bingo games and bake sales and car washes, but apparently have no time for Bible study or prayer or evangelism? Jesus reminds us that we must place our highest priority on seeking the kingdom of God. -- Bowen
