It is not unusual for the federal government to provide new identities for people who turn state's evidence at great personal risk. Frequently, insiders in criminal organizations are privy to the sort of information necessary to convict dangerous criminals. In return for their cooperation these witnesses are pardoned for their own complicity in the crimes committed. They are then supplied a new life. This life involves new names, homes, vocations, and backgrounds. The old life is history. They very literally vanish to this old life. A refusal of the new life that is offered makes such a person vulnerable to the retaliation of those against whom they have testified. This decision would place them and their family at great personal risk. The only way to ensure their safety involves embracing the new life and living it as fully as one can.
