It is said that a close-minded person is one who bottles up the darkness of his own mind because he is afraid that any light which enters might rearrange his prejudices and awaken him to the responsibilities of righteous living. Most of us suffer from some close-mindedness, our bias about certain things firmly entrenched in our hearts and minds, and it is often too easy to resist hearing "the other side." Most of us have heard the old story of the woman who continually "Amen-ed" the preacher who was speaking out vigorously against gambling, drinking, and womanizing, but who accused the preacher of "meddling" when he spoke out against gossiping. Those of us who try to close out the complete word of God are similar to the man who had been blinded by a grenade in World War 2. Forty years later, the man regained partial vision after a severe fall, but was so agitated by bright light that he was forced to wear dark glasses at all times. A physician assured the man he could have his full sight restored if he would agree to an operation, but the man declined, saying, "Doctor, I have lived in darkness for so long, I don't think I could bear to see full light." There is a Chinese proverb which says: "A mind enlightened is like heaven; a mind in darkness is like hell." -- Byrd
