It took 72 years to complete the building of the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. In October, 1978, Queen Elizabeth II dedicated England's "last great cathedral." Her grandfather, King Edward VII, laid the foundation in 1904. The building has survived two world wars. It has continued through bankruptcy, labor strife and rising costs. The work was once stopped for two years by a strike. Thieves broke in and stole the bronze bars for the last big stained glass window, so that it was not installed until a few days before the dedication.
During the darkest and most difficult years of the war, King George VI visited the cathedral builders and told them, "Keep on with the work, if only in a small way. Refuse to be beaten."
King George was talking about a building. But those words could have been John's as he spoke to the persecuted Christians in the first century. "Keep on with the work. Refuse to be beaten. And if you do, you will come to know the joy of eternal victory, unending satisfaction and everlasting comfort."
