It was the most magnificent...

It was the most magnificent rainbow either of them had ever seen. They were traveling across New Mexico, a place noted for rainbows. But this one was incredible! Rising up out of the desert in magnificent surprise, it arced brilliantly across the background of dark, angry-looking clouds and descended in perfect curvature back into the sandy sea from which it sprang. The driver spotted a wide place in the road up ahead, slowed the car, and stopped. The air was crisp and cool as they emerged from their vehicle. There was the acrid scent of ozone in the air, not surprising after all the lightning they had witnessed, at times so fierce it had seemed it would rip completely through the clouds and leave the stars exposed. But the storm was moving on, serving as a dramatic background to this incredible rainbow. Simultaneously they expressed the same thought, "God's promise ..." They looked at one another, grinning their acknowledgment that once again, as so often, their thoughts were identical. It was that special bonding that some friends were privileged to know. It served to remind them that God's great desire is also relationship. Why else would God have sent his Son to live with us as a human being? Why else would God create the wonder of deep, loving, spirit-bonding friendship? Why else would God paint the sky with rainbows? -- Fannin
