When Lyndon Baines Johnson was President, he instituted "the Great Society." This was a program to help those who suffered from the effects of poverty and racism. LBJ stated that "... we have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich society, but upward to the Great Society." The term "Great Society" caught on and was used to describe many of the President's domestic programs. Those programs included the war on poverty, improving the nation's educational systems, providing for the nation's senior citizens, rebuilding cities, and preserving the American countryside.
