It's a matter of confidence...

It's a matter of confidence -- it has happened. We are loved continually and we have been freed, in order that we may be a kingdom. But in this old German community, traumatic events, such as the world wars and the Depression, are not easily forgotten. In the wars, persecution by neighboring communities of non-German extraction was common, including the burning of churches of German-speaking congregations. During the Depression, one deck of cards was the only form of entertainment in the community, and it made the rounds, people walking a mile to meet and pass it on. Suicide was uppermost in the minds of many, and in some areas reached near-epidemic proportions. Is it any wonder that the people of this area have been beaten down, and the faith they live is a faith to endure, to get by, but not a faith to empower? Facing such catastrophic events may leave many wondering if they are truly loved and have in fact been freed of sin, when sin seems to surround them so completely. Yet there is pride in knowing that one has made it through, and faith is found in surprising places: the farm wife who always managed to find a meal for a transient that came to her door during the Depression years, as they often did; the openness to life and the readiness for what life could offer of another; and in others, on-going steadiness of purpose and good cheer. In the long term, God's continuing love and the freedom given us shows in the quiet glow in the lives of many. -- Johnson-Hoy
