I've discovered, thanks to my wife's observation and wisdom, that I look for too many pats on the back. Let me give you some examples. At home: if I pitch in on meal preparation when we've both had a hectic day in our work, or when I do a task that my wife would normally do. Or, in my work: when I preach an especially good sermon or handle an administrative task for a board chairman.
I know if is nice to get a pat on the back, a compliment on something I've done, but I need not go looking for them. The tasks at home are only part of the needs of the family, no matter who does them. And the good job at work is only what I've been called to do.
Jesus pointed this out to the disciples, "We have only done what was our duty." And he relates this to our level of faith. If we had faith in the source of power, God, very little would be impossible for us. Our response to life would be praise, rather than looking for compliments.
