Jamie was a pastor's nightmare...

Jamie was a pastor's nightmare. She often pointed out the faults of others. Her sharp tongue discouraged and angered people. After encountering Jamie, new church members lapsed in attendance and older members shied away from positions of responsibility. Jamie related to others in a way reminiscent of half a verse from this passage in Hebrews: "And let us consider how to provoke one another ..." (v. 24). Jamie certainly knew how to provoke other church members! The writer, however, urges fellow Christians to "consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds." The admonition reminds me of the words of Katherine Anne Porter: "Love must be learned, and learned again and again; there is no end to it. Hate needs no instruction, but waits only to be provoked." After all, if love came automatically, why would Jesus bother to command us to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves? -- Bristow
