In January of 1993 the Supreme Court handed down a rather disturbing ruling. At issue was the case of a Texas man who was sentenced to be put to death for killing a police officer in 1981. But evidence subsequently came to light that indicated that he was not the guilty person. Nevertheless, the court ruled that the new evidence did not have to be considered and that the execution could proceed. Three of the justices dissented from that opinion, with Justice Blackmun saying that the execution of a person who could show that he is innocent comes extremely close to simple murder. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." In 1 Samuel we discover that God holds open the prospect for new and amazing events. -- Bowen
