In January of 1997, Katie Couric interviewed Gordon Liddy on the NBC Today show. Her questions centered on his book, Will. As Mr. Liddy commented about John Dean, he referred to Mr. Dean as a rat and a snitch. Mr. Liddy acknowledged his illegal and inappropriate acts but took pride in the fact that he did not become an informant like John Dean.
All along the continuum of history, from the Pharisees to our own lives, it is easy to rationalize and excuse one's own sins and wrongdoings or to see them as being less than the other person's mistakes. In the process we can miss the Christ who has drawn near to us and who offers us renewal and forgiveness without the need to remove the speck which is in our brother's or sister's eye.
