Jason McAlwain, a senior in high school and the team manager, was permitted to dress
for his team's final home game. Jason's responsibilities were keeping track of the
basketballs before the game and at half-time. He also made sure there were clean towels
for showers after the game and bottles of water for the players during the game. Jason
loved the game and being a part of the team. Jason is autistic and therefore limited in the
things he can do. But on this night, the coach asked him to dress in the school uniform
and take his place on the bench. No one dreamed he would play, but with four minutes
left in the game, the coach sent him in. The first time he handled the ball he took a shot
and missed. The same thing happened when he took his second shot. Then it was like the
heavens opened for Jason. After missing two shots he made every other attempt and
ended with twenty points. The cheers were louder in that gym that night than they had
ever been before. Jason knew it would happen, there was no doubt in his mind he could
score if he only had the opportunity. Jason really believed.
Sounds familiar doesn't it? A woman who had suffered for twelve years knew if she could only touch the clothing of Jesus she would be made well. And she was made well and Jesus commended her for a faith that was satisfied by simply reaching out and touching. The human spirit and the desire to fulfill a mission in life is a powerful sign of a given faith.
