Jay was a bit of...

Jay was a bit of a misfit. A smart student but neither a good athlete nor a socially adept kid, he had only a few friends. Others liked Jay well enough but not enough to really consider him a friend. But the gangs at school saw him as an easy mark and they taunted him and stole from him whenever they could.
Part of the reason that Jay was such a target was the fact that he never seemed willing to fight back. Someone would say something mean to him, and he would act as if he had not even heard the remark. When things were stolen he almost never even reported it. For some reason Jay just suffered through it all. Sometimes he even struck up a friendly conversation with the very people who taunted him.
But after a while an odd thing happened. Jay's passive attitude and willingness to talk to the people who bothered him the most began to have a strange effect. Gang members puzzled about this strange kid willing to suffer at their hands. As he talked to them, they found themselves starting to like him. Eventually, when someone started in on Jay, another would come to his defense and the taunting and the harassment stopped. Somehow, by not fighting back and by suffering in a friendly way, Jay changed the very people who could have ended up as his enemies.
