Jean was struggling with Alzheimer's disease when it was discovered that she had breast cancer. Her oncologist tried a new drug that was supposed to shrink the tumor; however, it failed to work. When the oncologist made the decision to remove Jean's breast, her family was distraught. They could not begin to understand how frightened their mother would be when she was in the hospital.
Two days before surgery, the nursing home phoned Jean's eldest daughter. "You'd better come right away," the nurse said. "Several hours ago we found your mother on the floor. She appeared to be fine, but now she is unable to use her right side. The doctor has been in. I think you should come in now and I'll tell you what she had to say, after you get safely here."
