Jeremy was highly regarded by the firm with which he had been employed for 20 years, moving up the ranks from salesman to vice president of marketing. He and his wife, Joanna, and their three children lived in a peaceful neighborhood, their spacious home on a wooded site overlooking a lake. But in spite of all of the outward appearances Jeremy was restless and unfulfilled. While successful in the eyes of business and community, he wasn't convinced that at this halfway point through his life he had contributed anything to the betterment of humankind.
After listening carefully to his story, Jeremy's pastor invited him to have breakfast with a group of men from their congregation. At that breakfast eight men shared the emptiness they felt about always seeking the next promotion, how they felt trapped by the materialistic values of our society, and they discovered a common sense of guilt about not spending enough time with their families. They resolved to meet regularly to support and encourage each other in living the values and priorities they believed in.
Paul says that "no testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone." Jeremy was relieved to find that his problems were common among other men. Together they discovered that their way out of their problems was actually to share them and to help each other through them.
