Jessie was the only child...

Jessie was the only child of parents who were determined that she would become a great success. Their dreams as she entered college were that she'd choose a career that would bring her both fame and fortune. They were always there for her with advice and money to finance her education.
To their dismay, she majored in religion. But they waited patiently, sure that she'd "come to her senses." She eventually graduated with a degree in religion and told her parents she was going to graduate school to pursue the Christian ministry. When she enrolled in the seminary, her parents withdrew their support. They kept telling her how foolish she was, and how she was making them ashamed in front of their friends.
Jessie finally stopped going home at each semester break, except for Christmas. As she told her parents that God had called her to this decision, she explained, "I must do what God wants. I must preach the gospel in spite of your disapproval. I hope and pray that you'll understand, but if not, I must do what pleases God."
