"... Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears,..."
How can I ever again be ashamed of my fears and pains and emotions? The loud cries and tears of Jesus were an acceptable offering to God. One of the most destructive notions ever foisted on us has been the idea that the "real" Christian will never give way to fears. That if we really believe in God's promises we will not grieve. The stoic Christian is a lot of bunk. Fortunately, we have begun to recognize the destructive nature, not only physically but spiritually as well, of bottled emotions.
It is not un-Christian to admit fears and hurts; it is un-human not to do so. Jesus understood strong emotions and he showed them. In fact, sometimes I believe our feelings are our most honest communication with God. In those times when our words fail -- even in prayer -- we can weep, or laugh, or gnash our teeth before the Lord. We will be heard and understood, even as Jesus was.
