Jesus' feeding of the 5,000 was regarded as so important that it is recorded in all four gospels. Giving food to the hungry topped the list of loving deeds in the parable of the sheep and goats (Matthew 25:35). The Roman emperor Julian, vocal enemy of Christianity and self-proclaimed pagan, nonetheless admitted that "these Christians do not merely feed their own poor; they feed the poor of the whole city." Pastor mayor of New York City, Fiorello LaGuardia, once served as a judge in a police court. An old man was brought before him who had been arrested for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family. LaGuardia said to the man, "I have no choice but to fine you ten dollars." Then LaGuardia took ten dollars out of his pocket and paid the man's fine, dropping it into his hat. LaGuardia then declared, "I hereby fine everyone in this courtroom fifty cents for living in a city where a man has to steal bread to eat." He ordered the bailiff to collect the fines and give them to the man. The old man departed with 47 dollars and fifty cents.
