Jesus speaks to our fear...

Jesus speaks to our fear in these passages. Fear is often a terrible emotion. It can cripple us and prevent us from functioning. The words, "Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid," continue to ring down through the centuries. We have been created to grow and to learn, and by learning to trust Christ, we discover that problems and challenges hold opportunities for us -- opportunities to deepen our faith, sharpen our talents, and hone our skills. God does not call the equipped; God equips the called. When one of my boys was small, he made a little clay cross in VBS. They fired it in a kiln, and a cord was threaded through a little hole in the top so I could wear it around my neck. He was proud of it, and so was I. The second time I wore it, I pulled it off and accidentally dropped it. It broke into about five pieces. We were both brokenhearted. But we picked up those pieces, and we cut some stiff cardboard in the shape of a cross and painted it black. We laid those broken pieces on it and glued it back together. I love that cross. It will always be a symbol to me of healing and hope, because the love of God is stronger than the fear that comes with the "unknowns" of life. It reminds me that Christ's words, "Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid," are just as real today as when they were first said to those frightened disciples.
