Joan was convinced that herbs were the answer to good health. Joan also knew that diet and exercise were important. So Joan's diet consisted of whole grains and vegetables, fish and chicken, Omega three fats, very little red meat, and several glasses of fresh juice each day. Joan never smoked or touched alcohol, and she exercised regularly and used herbs. Joan drank three cups of green tea daily because of its reputed anti-cancer properties. She drank a concoction of red clover, licorice, thyme, and soy, because those herbs are related to breast cancer prevention and Joan's mother died of breast cancer. She took garlic tablets to combat heart disease. She consumed many other herbs in tablet form.
When her pastor asked why she took all these herbs, Joan's reply was simple: "I want to cover all the bases." The congregation was surprised when, at the age of 67, Joan contracted colon cancer and died.
The citizens of Athens wanted to cover all their bases, too. They built an altar to an unknown god -- they didn't want to miss or offend any god. Paul pointed them to the only God they needed.
