John and Mary Schramm tell a story about the discovery of gifts in the congregation. It comes from the Community of Christ in Washington, D.C., a congregation they helped to found. As the congregation was becoming established, many of the people found some of the traditional tasks to do. They might have been musicians, teachers, bulletin-folders, typists, cooks, or cleaners. But there was one man in the parish who was having a hard time finding a place to serve. He talked with the Schramms about this one day, and John asked him, "What do you like to do?" The man answered, "Build and fly model airplanes." John said, "Then build them." So the men gathered the youngsters of the parish, and they built model airplanes. It grew into a wonderful service for the youngsters for the impoverished neighborhood where their congregation was. The gifts we have by the Spirit may be hidden, but as we are one body, every gift has its use for the kingdom of God.
