For John the Baptist, baptism...
Illustration
For John the Baptist, baptism symbolized repentance. All of us are sinners who need to repent and receive God's grace. However, in John's day, some people had come to believe that they were saved, even though they were sinners, because of their bloodlines. They felt that because they were Jews, descendants of Abraham, God would automatically save them. After all, they were God's chosen people! John adamantly maintained that bloodlines did not save. What was needed was repentance -- a radical about-face in the direction of one's life. Allowing our faith to change the way we live our lives is called sanctifying grace. John extolled this life-changing experience to those who gathered about him in the wilderness.
