John the Baptizer knew his place. Where his cousin, Jesus, was concerned, he made no effort to scramble for position. Others could learn from his example. Take for instance the woman who once approached President Abraham Lincoln, looking for a military commission for her son. She rolled out her own heavy artillery, saying, "My grandfather fought at Lexington, my father fought at New Orleans, and my husband was killed at Monterey. I ask for the commission not as a favor but as a right." Lincoln replied sagely, "I guess, Madam, your family has done enough for the country. It's time to give somebody else a chance."
