John Wesley, having served Christ...

John Wesley, having served Christ for a decade as an Anglican priest (ordained deacon in
1725 and priest in 1728), still experienced the risen Jesus in another, deeper way. This
experience occurred while he listened to a person reading Luther's preface to the epistle
to the Romans. He said, "While he was describing the change which God works in the
heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed...." What he knew of the
Bible and of Christ was confirmed as well as modified and deepened by his experience.
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had spent time with Jesus. Yet on that first Easter evening they also were strangely warmed of heart when the risen Jesus explained the scriptures to them. The risen Jesus continues to touch our hearts through proclamation of the good news in the scriptures and at his table. His warming our hearts confirms, modifies, and deepens our faith.
