Jon was awakened by an early phone call one bone-chilling morning. The local school needed a substitute teacher for one of the more challenging classroom situations. Jon, who anxiously awaited a teaching contract as soon as a job opened up, scurried to the local school. As he entered into the classroom, he was verbally mocked as all substitute teachers were in that school system. The students immediately tried to push the boundaries to see what they could get away with, in terms of discipline, not doing schoolwork, and trying to identify those emotional buttons that elicit hurt feelings. Jon discovered those students who struggled with their schoolwork. As he gave out the assignment for the day, he spent much time with the struggling students who probably would not get into the finer universities when they graduate.
Jon is the teacher who is like Isaiah's humiliated servant. He finds a way to join others who struggle in the challenged students with lower grades. On the Sunday of Passion and Palm Sunday, this Messiah is at the side of the marginalized in all societies and all times. Isaiah 50:9 asks, "It is the Lord who helps me; who will declare me guilty?"
