A judge went to visit a wise old colleague. The judge was facing a decision in a trial that was breaking new ground in jurisprudence. The decision was in the area of medical ethics considering values that had never been dealt with in a court of law before. Hers would be a precedent-setting major decision and she was frightened of her authority and responsibility. In essence she was going to be writing a new law. She laid all the pertinent issues of the case before her mentor as best she could and then asked for his advice and counsel. The wise old judge listened attentively, reflected on her words and feelings, felt her turmoil. At last he leaned forward and kissed her on the nose.
