Judy's grandmother imparted many words of wisdom, but the one that Judy remembers
most was, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." Judy's senior class had decided to do
something that would improve the living conditions of some group of people as their
senior project. During September, students could pitch their ideas to the class. The last
day of classes in September was set aside for the vote.
When Judy first raised her idea it was dismissed out of hand; nobody wanted to raise money for the local food bank -- it wasn't glamorous enough. Rather, ideas were presented that talked of raising food, money, clothes, books, and personal hygiene items for people in Africa, South America, or in the far north. Nobody, it seemed, wanted to help the local poor.
Nobody, that is, but Judy. Undaunted and driven by her grandmother's proverb, Judy kept raising her idea. She polished it, worked on simplifying it, and garnered support from the local social agencies. Every few days during the presentation period, Judy presented her idea. It got to the point that her classmates looked automatically to her when the presentation period began.
In the end, it worked. On voting day, two proposals were put forward for consideration. Judy's won. One of her classmates quipped, "If we hadn't picked Judy's project, we wouldn't have heard the end of it!"
Blind Bartimaeus employed the same strategy; his squeaky wheel was heard by Jesus, who liberally poured the oil of sight upon him.
