Just as Samuel lamented for...

Just as Samuel lamented for Saul and Jonathan after their deaths on the battlefield of Mount Gilboa, so should we lament all those who fall on the bloody and bitter fields of battle. According to a recent almanac, more than one million Americans have lost their lives to war during the past 130 years alone. Another 1 million were wounded during the same period. And if we had the statistics for all other countries, we would be staggered by the unbelievable numbers of wasted lives. "How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!" cries David, and realizing that our fallen ones are most often those in the relative innocence of youth should cause us to reflect upon the accusation found in the words of Albert Camus. "We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves."
