Kathy has a choice to either go to the local shopping mall with her friends on Saturday, or
volunteer at the local food pantry located in the damp church basement. In Mark 8,
Caesarea Philippi was the location of the ancient shopping mall of assorted local gods.
When Peter confessed Jesus as the "Messiah," it was in the presence of all the populist
gods of the times in the pagan Roman Empire.
"Every day we are challenged by false gods. It is easy to 'believe' if you have never been assailed by radical unbelief" (Douglas John Hall, Why Christian: For Those on the Edge of Faith [Minneapolis: Augsburg Fortress, 1998], p. 16). In times of post-Christendom, one can no longer assume everybody confesses Jesus as "Messiah." Similar to the period of many gods in Caesarea Philippi, we stand with Peter every day to confess that Jesus is Messiah. One day, we may even be asked to take up our cross and follow this Messiah through suffering (Mark 8:34).
