Kathy was a quiet girl...

Kathy was a quiet girl who mostly stayed in the background of whatever was going on at the time. She wasn't unpopular, but her shyness tended to make people overlook her. In a crowd, she could be almost invisible. Kathy worked hard at school, taking on each subject, each assignment as a challenge that had to be conquered. She was a good student with marks in the A-/B+ range. She was assigned the clarinet in music class, and though this was her first exposure to music, she practiced diligently and became a solid member of the school band. She wasn't the lead clarinetist, but a reliable member of the band who worked hard to make the band the best it could be.
In her senior year, the school district challenged each high school to pick a team of four students who would compete in a simulation event, similar to the reality television shows which are popular today. Each team would be given the same simulation: they were leaders of a small country that had inadvertently become the target of a nuclear strike. The team had to come up with solutions: ways to avert the strike; strategies to deal with a possible attack and its aftermath; who to protect and who to leave exposed.
Students lined up to be part of this team. Everyone was surprised when the senior teachers unanimously chose Kathy as part of the team, even though she hadn't applied. They knew her work ethic and her determination to persevere, despite the obstacles, made her a logical choice.
We don't know much about Mary, but something about her so impressed God that to the surprise of all, God picked her to mother God's beloved Son.
