The kids in the neighborhood...

The kids in the neighborhood decided to play team tag. Two sides were selected. One side would be "it, while the other side tried to get from one end of the block to the other without being tagged. The catch was that the kids had to move in pairs, hand in hand, either to tag members of the other team or, as members of the other team, to move untagged from the starting point to the goal.
Bill and Mark partnered up. They were good. They knew every bush and fence on the block. They moved well together. Just when they were about fifty feet from the goal, they were spotted by a pair from the other team, who came running fast after them. Billy turned and led Mark through the last thicket of mulberry bushes.
They were moving so fast that Mark did not see Billy step over a pole that was resting about a foot off the ground. Mark just continued to run after Billy, until his shin hit the pole. Their hands separated and Mark went hurling through the branches onto the ground. As Billy had to stop and come back to grasp hands to continue on to the goal, the other team caught up and tagged them.
"Sorry, Mark, Billy said apologetically. "I thought you knew that pole was there. We should have gone around the bushes.
