King Cyrus of Persia held...

King Cyrus of Persia held a noble prince and his family prisoner. When they were brought before the great king, he asked the prince what he would give to be set free. The prince replied, "Half my kingdom." "And what will you give me if I set your children free?" The prince replied, "I will give you all I possess." "Then tell me," asked King Cyrus, "what will you give me if I set your wife free?" At that the prince replied, "For that I would give you my life." Moved by the prince's reply, Cyrus let him and his family go. Later the prince asked his wife if she had not found the king to be a noble and handsome man. She answered, "I did not notice him. I only had eyes for the one who said he would lay down his life for me." The truth of God is revealed in a person, not a proposition. Theory, rational ideas, and linear religious logic offer us propositional truth. God offers us personal truth: the Son. When we have eyes for the one who did lay down his life for us, all other values seem to fall by the wayside.
