King David, for all his sins and shortcomings, was at least open to God's guidance. Following the direction given in the prophet Samuel's dream, David wisely defers his temple building project to Solomon, his son. It is true that, as Psalm 127 puts it, "Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it." David did not get to build a house for God, but God blessed the house of David forever."
