In Methodist preacher Mrs. Sarah Crosby's Journal (1729-1804), she describes her agony of heart and mind. She was afraid of death and was anxious about worldly temptations. This particular veil of suffering was removed when she was twenty years old as she recognized her spiritual struggle for what it was. She wrote, "The next day I could not help believing God had taken full possession of my heart. I walked in light and liberty: and blessed by God, continued to do so, but I longed for more." [Thomas M. Morrow, Early Methodist Women (London: Epworth Press, 1967), p. 13.]
She corresponded with John Wesley, who advised her not to preach from a text, but to pray and exhort. However, the success which accompanied her ministry helped change his mind. He sent a letter from the Manchester Conference to another: "We give the right hand of fellowship to Sarah Mallet, and have no objection to her being a preacher in our connexion, so long as she preaches the Methodist doctrines, and attends to our discipline." "... where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
