It has frequently been said that nothing unites a body of people as quickly and completely as a war. That was certainly true during the Second World War in the United States. The stories coming from England and France were more than enough to convince Americans that Nazism threatened our peaceful existence. So, we closed ranks. Those who argued and even fought one another in their daily lives gave up their animosities for the general welfare of the country.
During wartime, patriotism runs high and the national anthem is sung with gusto. Old Glory waves in the breezes and we salute her with deep respect. Pictures of the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, the White House, and others reaffirm the greatness and rightness of the
U.S.A.
What does it take to unite Christ's followers? A crisis? Perhaps. At any rate, it is recorded, "Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul ..." Whether we like it or not, we are engaged in warfare, but are we "of one heart and soul"?
