One of the favorite stories my first grade school teacher used to tell on me was this one: On one page of our workbook was a big drawing of a policeman. On the other page was a list of things to find and circle on the picture - like hat, whistle, buckle, and so on. I found everything except "star." It was, of course, right there on his chest, where you would expect a badge to be; but I couldn't see it. In desperation, I walked to Mrs. Weaver's desk, threw down the book and, in my most disguested little boy voice, demanded, "All right, I give up, where is it?" She thought it was funny, but the point was: I knew what a policeman was and I knew what a star was, but I couldn't see the connection. I needed my teacher to show me.
The Ethiopian knew what Isaiah said, and he knew his need, but he couldn't see the connection. Philip was able to show him that Jesus was the connecting link between God's word and the Ethiopian's need. We are often called to Philip's task, to help others see the vital link of Christ between their experience of God's call and their need.
