"The Lord informed me of the plots that my enemies were making against me ..."
The prophet didn't get into such a bind, such a sad state of affairs, because he made the mistake of infiltrating the Mafia and was foolish enough to preach religion and righteousness to them. To hear the "fix" he was in, you'd think he completely misjudged his constituency, as the politicians say. The truth of the matter is that Jeremiah was in deep trouble because he went to the "righteous" with a message of judgment from the Lord. He was calling upon God's people to repent. That's always dangerous! Why?
The truth of the matter is that his hearers had a very good opinion of themselves. But, Yahweh said they lacked. mercy and compassion. It reminds me of several years ago, and all the fume and furor in Plains, Georgia. (Remember it? It's always easier to see the mess in someone else's backyard, so let's bring out the best pharisee in ourselves and pursue this.)
Remember the Pastor of the Plains Baptist Church? Remember his saying -- of Christian people -- who were out after his "hide":
"I see more love in Billy Carter who always walks around with a beer can in his hand and only comes to church for kin-folk's baptisms."
He said there was so much hate in the air you could feel it.
They would close down the church before they would admit a black to membership.
God's prophets will always be under attack, as was Jeremiah, when they say, "Thus says the Lord."
