James surprises us with these words: "Friendship with the world is enmity with God." (4:4)
How often the church has tried to make its bed on earth. How often, as churchpeople, we have witnessed the pleas of TV preachers promising an earthly reward for a monetary gift. It goes like this: "Send in your dollar today and receive a heavenly blessing."
There are other ways we make friends with the world. Everytime we let justice become a side issue, we've made friends with the world. Everytime we let the hungry die, we've made peace with the nature of the world. Everytime we grow cold or indifferent about a neighbor's plight, whether he lives nearby or faraway, we make peace with the world.
True peace is God given, and it comes only after war is declared upon all the problems that plague humankind.
