Whenever the grumblings of the people in the wilderness are examined, one thing is very clear. Their concerns were totally physical. Specifically, they wanted meat, fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. They were tired of the miraculous manna God had provided.
A second characteristic of their complaint is also obvious. They remembered "the good 'ole days" as being a little better than they really were. Afterall, they had been slaves, although they conveniently forgot that little detail when the growling in the stomach began.
A third event also ought be noted. God did not give them what they asked for -- namely, a tossed salad. Instead, they got the job of prophesying passed around a little more evenly. No more was Moses the only one to harrass with the plight of physical need. Now others could share the burden.
As our text ends, we still don't know how the people were fed. All we know is that God gave a physical problem a spiritual solution.
