Amos speaks loudly and clearly to our time as he suggests that religion involves more than what we traditionally call the "spiritual" aspects of faith. He talks about "seeking God," and then in the same breath calls for justice. Justice for Amos involves meeting the needs of the poor whatever they are and wherever they are evident.
On two overseas mission study tours I have been caught up in the beauty of worship in a different culture, only to be brought back to earth with a jolt at the sight of abject poverty. In Colombia I saw a woman rooting through garbage looking for food to eat. In India I saw persons who slept on the streets because that was literally the only home that they had. Seeking God has to mean more than temple worship and ritual. It means to establish justice -- and that includes bringing food and shelter to those in need, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Faith is much more than justice, but faith is impossible without justice. The heart of justice is love.
