Last winter the newspapers overflowed with stories about a guru who was trying to flee his Pacific Northwest enclave for another country. Stopped on the Atlantic seaboard, he was prevented by federal officials from departing American soil before questions were answered about his personal and group activities. As the story unfolded we learned he owned enough Rolls Royces to drive a different one every day for three months running!
Where, how and why does a religious leader collect enough revenue to buy ninety Rolls Royces? The answer can only be that he commanded enough self-presence to convince his followers (or at least to allow them to believe) that he, personally, was worthy of adoration.
Paul and Barnabas could have slid down that slippery slope at Lystra. Everybody was convinced they were divine. The garlands were sent for. Why didn't they "accept the Rolls Royces"? Because they knew which direction the adoration ought to flow.
Do we?
