The last words of...

The last words of David reflect his confidence that his efforts in the realm of governing the people were not wasted. It is said that politics is a dirty business, yet God works through the affairs of government to bring about his purposes; for God has an on-going relationship ("an everlasting covenant") with his world. That is why Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as he approached the gallows on which he died at the hands of Nazi Germany (for his role in the assassination plot on Hitler's life), was able to look with confidence beyond his efforts and his death to see that this was not the ending, but only the beginning. In the movie Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace his interrogator says to Dietrich before he steps to the gallows stark naked, "So this is how it ends." To which Dietrich Bonhoeffer responds with a deep assurance, "No."
