The late, brilliant theologian Joseph Sittler had the following to say about the mission of the church and the work of the clergy: "Theologians and preachers cannot make people believe. They can only explicate what it might mean to believe, in such a way as to lead others to entertain the possibility of believing ... In a sense that is what a sermon is for: To hang the holy possible in front of the mind of the listeners and lead them to that wonderful moment when they say, 'If it were true it would do.' To pass from that to belief is the work of the Holy Spirit, not of the preacher or teacher." Our mission has been defined by Jesus Christ. Now it is up to the church to be able to say, "Mission accomplished!" -- Joseph
