Leslie Weatherhead wrote a book called Jesus and Ourselves. (Jesus and Ourselves, New York: Abingdon-Cokesbury, no date, p. 13f.) In the book is a chapter titled Jesus' Respect for Our Personality. Weatherhead lists four ways in which a man can impose his will on another. The four ways are physical force, powerful personality, intellectual superiority, and the appeal to the emotions. Weatherhead notes the ways Jesus' powerful personality affected people. Men left their work at two words from Christ. Townspeople hustled him toward a cliff, but fall back when he turns on them. Police fall back from him in the Garden of Gethsemane, awed by the majesty of his bearing.
Weatherhead cites the willingness of the man in today's gospel-account to follow Jesus. "[Jesus] takes precautions lest the tremendous impact of his personality should throw them off balance.... So to his impulsive follower he says, 'Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man hath not where to lay his head.' As though he would say, 'Go home and think about it. Don't make your decision just because I want you to do it.' "
