"Let him who has my word speak my word faithfully." What a challenge those words are to contemporary disciples who so often are afraid to confess with their lips what they believe in their hearts. We seem to have little difficulty in talking with others about our favorite teams, our cars, cosmetics, or contests, but when it comes to matters of faith, we are strangely silent.
Carveth Mitchell tells us what might happen if more of us shared the Word of God faithfully. He tells of standing at the door of his church greeting parishioners at the close of a service when a woman approached him and said, "You probably don't remember me because the last time you saw me, I was in bed." Mr. Mitchell notes such a statement can cause more than a little discomfort for a pastor! The woman reminded him he had visited a lady in the bed next to hers in the hospital. She then explained she had not been attending church and was facing major surgery the next day. The pastor's prayer and the invitation of her roommate to read the Bible aloud with her had given her a sense of peace and confidence she had not known for years. She was here in this church at the invitation of that church member who had simply shared her faith and an invitation to come and learn more of the God revealed in Jesus Christ.
One woman's quiet testimony had become a life-long changing experience for another. It happened in Jeremiah's time, and it still happens in ours.
