"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves ..."
In college I had a faculty advisor during my pre-law days who asked why I was interested in some religion courses. In our conversation, he volunteered that he could never belong to a denomination which would insist on a "confession." He said he never wanted to wallow in past regrets. How shallow his understanding of sin! Confession in our church is linked to the very condition of our being; it is not simply a daily diary of deeds or misdeeds. Our condition is apart from God. To believe otherwise is truly to deceive ourselves.
