Life is uncertain, and because we cannot say for sure what will happen, we have to take precautions to protect ourselves. Precautions like paying taxes to support a military in case there is a war. We hire consultants to give us advice on retirement planning. We contract with car clubs and insurance companies because we know that bad things happen. The tragedy isn't that bad things happen to good people; the tragedy is that because bad things can happen, we don't always trust good people.
How many of us routinely pick up hitchhikers? Steve is someone who picks up hitchhikers all the time. Sometimes he not only offers people a ride, he takes them to his home and gives them food and a bed to sleep in. When asked how he can do that, he says, "I allow the Holy Spirit to tell me whom I should trust." How many of us are so trusting? Not in human beings, but in God? How many of us who see an unsavory looking fellow defer to God's judgment before deciding on how we shall act? The tragedy isn't that we don't trust; the tragedy is that we don't trust God enough to lead us.
