As life unfolds we find many causes for rejoicing. How happy is the young lady who proudly displays her newly-acquired engagement diamond. What a happy day is the wedding of a young couple. What joy radiates from the faces of new parents as they look for the first time on their newborn offspring. What glee is exhibited by parents as they watch their son score a touchdown in a high school football game. A housewife will rejoice, and share the good news with a neighbor or friend, when she purchases a real bargain during a store sale. As days come and go, such rejoicing is intermingled with despair as our good fortunes take a turn for the worse and we have cause for sadness or despair. Saint Paul reveals the true source of rejoicing -- in the Lord. How happy Christians should be: our Creator-God notes our condition at all times and always blesses us with cause for joy. And such rejoicing is endless. We are God's children, not only every day and year but even beyond time into eternity. Certainly we should be moved to rejoicing over that fact. But we have another, better source of continuous joy. Saint Paul is not referring to worldly joy, like coming upon a $100 bill someone had lost. He is referring to blessedness -- joy in Christ and salvation -- spiritual joy which nothing on earth can take away or destroy. It is the peace of God within our hearts as we contemplate God's eternal love for us. We are blest through prayer, communication with God, bringing our concerns to him, freeing ourselves of fear and guilt. Nothing can compare to the rejoicing called blessedness, for it is a gift from God. -- Lentz
